The Standard, East Village

4.0

New York, NY
  • Up to 50 guests
  • Select services
  • Indoor & outdoor

Located off Cooper Square in one of New York’s most vibrant, artistic neighborhoods, The Standard, East Village is cozy, charming, and eccentric in equal measure—very much in the spirit of its surroundings. You enter the 21-story tower through an original tenement-style building before ascending to unparalleled views of Manhattan from the hotel's crowned jewel, The Penthouse. There’s a quiet, calm garden tucked away at street level that in the warmer months is filled with lush topiaries and floral arrangements, and in the cold season transforms into a magical winter wonderland. On the second floor, The Overlook is a cozy room perfect for a rehearsal dinner or cocktails, connected to The Perch which overlooks The Garden. Downstairs, there's Narcissa restaurant, which boasts its own private terrace, the street-side Café Standard, and NO BAR, a highly inclusive new wave gay bar with custom artwork and a disco ball.

Having never been privy to what goes into a wedding reception, I was in the dark about a lot. So, I had difficulty understanding what to choose and how much our choices would cost. If it wasn’t for the close proximity to the church, I may have chosen a different venue for our reception. The food and beverage was the biggest expense and the biggest source of confusion. The real disappointment of the F&B was the limited amount of food. The shrimp appetizer was good. However, there was so little, if you didn’t grab some, it was gone. Of the three entrees to choose from, the only one that was any good was the fish and the portion was less than one would reasonably expect for an entree. The chicken was dry and hard, a huge disappointment. The lemon tart dessert was good. The space itself is very nice. Fortunately, it was just the right size for our reception.

The Washington Square Hotel in New York's Greenwich Village has a microwedding package available, as well as other venue offerings (attached) which might work for a rehearsal dinner or a mid-size wedding. We have also offered cocktail receptions for wedding ceremonies that have occurred in our adjacent Washington Square Park. Additionally, The Washington Square Hotel has 149 rooms ranging in size and price. We do several wedding room blocks a year and we are a great downtown option. About our spaces: The Deco Room (Hotel Lobby Bar): 24 seated guests, 35 standing. Perfect for a microwedding dinner, an elopment, rehearsal dinner, or welcome party. Great for standing cocktail hours. The Lounge: 35 seated guests or 45 standing. The Dining Room: Please call for capacity The outdoor parklet: Please call for capacity

North Square Restaurant at the Washington Square Hotel hosted our engagement party. We chose the downstairs lounge for our daytime cocktail/brunch of about 30 people. We had passed appetizers, some stationary plates, and an open bar. There was plenty of room to walk around and mingle, but also sit down and chat. It was intimate but fun! The service was great. We enjoyed working with the staff and menu planning for our special day. They assisted with florals, balloons, and signs.

The cocktails were delicious, everyone was accomodating (including complimentary champagne in the room) and the Japanese soaking tub on the roof was sublime! We just got married in January 2020 and were lucky enough to find the Library Hotel in our venue search. Our wedding had 25 guests and was the most wonderful intimate wedding on their enclosed rooftop 14th floor area. The Poetry Garden was the perfect ceremony location with beautiful outdoor views and gorgeous lighting, while the Writer's Den was wonderful for our reception, right on the same floor with a long single table set up, enough room to dance, and was a beautiful space to begin with so we didn't need to do much to decorate. Margo was a dream to work with, always communicative and so helpful on the day of. No need to hire a DOC here -- Margo went above and beyond to help us set up, handle delivery with vendors, pass on our tips, coordinate our music timing, etc. The waitstaff and bar team were absolutely amazing, and the lead bartender was very knowledgeable, friendly and approachable. The rooms at the hotel were gorgeous and the staff left us presents in the form of chocolate and champagne on our wedding day. The outdoor patio was available for us to take pictures in the middle of the winter while it was snowing and you can see the New York Public Library from there. I highly recommend this space for anyone looking for an intimate wedding venue wiith catering and bar provided in-house. We visited a few other venues and none compared.

TWA Hotel

4.5

New York, NY
  • Up to 350 guests
  • All-inclusive
  • Indoor & outdoor
  • Starts at $20,000

Fully restored to its original glory, the TWA Flight Center offers 200,000 square feet of flexible space including outdoor terraces. Original details — the Vulcain clock, sparkling white penny tile and plush Chili Pepper Red carpets — exude Jet Age glamour. Saarinen’s iconic Flight Tubes (made famous by the 2002 film Catch Me If You Can) lead to guestrooms and museum exhibits, as well as provide a premium photo opp. The nostalgic clacking sound of two authentic Solari split-flap boards — and the view of the 1958 Lockheed Constellation on the tarmac just outside — fully transport visitors back to the golden age of travel.

Our wedding turned out to be incredibly beautiful, thanks to a unique venue and execution by its staff. However, that perfect day was almost derailed by the unacceptable pressure campaign to change ceremony locations due to concerns over furniture getting wet. We wanted this review to capture our nearly 20 months of planning with the TWA Hotel. PLANNING PROS: -Variety of spaces -Responsiveness -Flexibility for storing supplies CONS: -No FAQ document -Frustrating room block system -Forgotten menu tasting notification -Lack of communication and contradictory info from the Paris Cafe for rehearsal dinner THE WEDDING PROS: -Organized and accommodating staff -The food, especially the pastrami station and red velvet cake for dessert CONS: -Wrong display with typo on Solaris board in the Sunken Lounge -Our tiered wedding cake wasn’t cut and served even tho there clearly wasn’t enough sheet cake to pass around -The weather “policy”: We were told that we could make a final decision on an outdoor ceremony up until the morning of our wedding, and our point of contact reassured us of this during our final walkthru 2 weeks out. Our contract also secured the Sunken Lounge as the backup option if we chose to move indoors. However, in the final days and hours before our wedding, we were pressured to move our ceremony indoors, despite nearly all weather reports showing clear skies for our 5-6pm ceremony and rain only after 9pm. Our point of contact started questioning our outdoor plans 4-5 days before the wedding, and even met with us multiple times - first in the lobby while we were dropping off supplies 2 days before our wedding, again when we were checking in the next day, and yet again when we were at the pool before our rehearsal dinner, where we had to brush off our guests in order to have a serious meeting. Each time, they told us we needed to make a "final call" now, not the morning-of as we had been told before. After listing their reasons to move the ceremony indoors (which included threatening to release the Sunken Lounge from our backup option, despite what our contract said), the point of contact mentioned that the head manager was concerned about the rain damaging the leather chairs, and then proposed a “solution” of having the ceremony outside, but not setting up any chairs so that our guests would stand for the entire ceremony. It was clear to us that the real reason why we were being pressured was that the manager didn’t want their leather chairs to get wet! We asserted that, unless we were explicitly told we couldn't have our ceremony outside, we would stick with the outdoor option. The morning of our wedding, our day-of coordinator informed us that the venue was insisting they now had a “50% chance of rain policy”, giving them the “right” to change ceremony locations. We immediately forwarded reports from 10 weather sites that all had a chance of rain between 5-7pm at 0-30%. We finally saw chairs being set up outside in the mid-afternoon, and when our ceremony got underway, the clouds parted ways and the sun started shining. CONCLUSION: The TWA Hotel is such a special place to celebrate your wedding! Before you sign the contract, however, understand that you’ll have to stay on top of the planning process, and in cases like ours, fight for what you envision. Make sure the contract spells out any and all promises — there were items that we made sure they honored as it was clear the hotel’s policies had changed since the signing.

Is it when Central Park is a wonderland of cherry blossoms, or when the holiday lights make everything twinkle like a rom-com set? Weather-wise, May and June are your best bets for an outdoor wedding. But if you’re dreaming of an "Autumn in New York" aesthetic, aim for September or October when the air is crisp, and your guests won’t be sweating. But let's keep it real – in the city that never sleeps, love doesn't have an off-season, and neither do fabulous weddings. Winter nuptials? If you've set your heart on those prime dates or sought-after spots, earlier is definitely better. Think of it as your very own New York minute—the sooner you act, the more options you'll have. But if you're the spontaneous type or planning on a shorter engagement, don't fret! Flexibility on dates or considering unique or off-the-beaten-path venues can turn up some hidden gems, even at the last minute.
